Senior Defense Attorney (7+ years) – General Liability

Our General Claims Department is seeking a senior level defense attorney (7+ years of relevant experience in insurance defense, including in auto accident and premises liability, and/or commercial litigation) who is licensed and resides in California.

Salaries for this position range from $190,000 to $225,000, depending upon experience level and agreed-upon minimum hours, with significant bonus opportunities. Compensation and classification are based on the extent of directly relevant legal experience. Candidates without substantial relevant experience in the listed practice areas may be classified at a lower attorney level, with compensation commensurate to that level. Conversely, candidates with exceptional relevant experience may be considered for a higher classification within our attorney structure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage matters through all phases, including pleadings, discovery, law and motion, depositions, expert discovery, settlement negotiations, and pretrial preparation.
  • Review and revise pleadings, discovery requests and responses, motions, briefs, correspondence, deposition outlines, witness preparation materials, and trial documents.
  • Take and defend depositions of parties, witnesses, experts, and corporate representatives.
  • Prepare witnesses, experts, clients, and internal teams for depositions, hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trial.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding case status, strategy, risk, budgets, litigation developments, and settlement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with partners and firm leadership on case evaluation, staffing, trial preparation, client service, and matter management.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor associate attorneys, law clerks, paralegals, and other legal staff, including assigning work, reviewing work product, providing feedback, and supporting professional development.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be admitted to the State Bar of California and reside in California
  • Law degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Minimum of seven years of litigation experience, preferably including in auto accident and premises liability, and/or commercial litigation.
  • Trial experience a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to make in-person appearances on cases when needed.
  • Experience managing complex, high-stakes, high-volume, or multi-party litigation.
  • Experience with taking and defending depositions, attending court hearings, and preparing and arguing dispositive motions and pretrial submissions.
  • Experience working with expert witnesses, consultants, and investigators.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and reviewing the work of associate attorneys and legal staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters, deadlines, competing priorities, and client expectations with sound judgment and professionalism.
