SB 258: Cleaning Product Ingredient Disclosure

Walsworth partner Dee Cohen Katz recently contributed to the Daily Journal. In her article, titled “SB 258: Cleaning product ingredients disclosure”, she discusses a new bill that was signed into law on September 16, 2017, referred to as the Cleaning Product Right to Know Act of 2017. This new law will require companies to disclose all chemical ingredients contained in their home-use and institutional cleaning products. Under this new law, companies are expected to disclose this information online by 2020, and on product labels by 2021.

SB 258 aims to relieve the growing complaints of consumers regarding information on potential allergens or harmful substances being withheld.

Under this new law, many companies’ fears of potentially revealing confidential business information are also put at ease. The new bill states that in such cases, manufacturers can provide a generic chemical name to protect proprietary ingredients.
