Walsworth LLP is a 60+ attorney law firm with offices in Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. We handle and litigate large scale, complex matters primarily in California.
We are currently in search of an experienced Professional Development Manager ready for their next challenge. Using their deep knowledge of California law firm culture, our ideal candidate will be focused on energizing and educating our talented attorneys as they move forward on their career path with the Firm, driving all efforts in professional skills training, coaching, and mentorship. The Professional Development Manager will play a key role in our attorneys’ employment cycle, including recruitment, retention, performance evaluations, and promotions. The perfect fit for this new role is someone excited to design and implement a professional development strategy and program from the ground up and who can successfully develop and present creative solutions to Firm leadership.
This position has the opportunity to be 100% remote for the candidate with proven success in engaging others while working remotely. Our preferred candidate will reside in California. Candidates residing in Illinois, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas are also encouraged to apply only if available to travel periodically throughout the year to the Firm’s California office locations.
The ideal candidate will have experience working as an attorney in a law firm and 5+ years of professional development experience in a legal setting.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assess training and development needs of attorney groups and individuals in collaboration with practice group leaders and department heads.
- Develop measurable professional‑development outcomes to support attorney engagement, growth, and advancement.
- Meet one on one with attorneys to understand and support their professional goals and needs.
- Assist Firm leadership in developing leadership, management, teamwork, client service, and business development skills for attorneys at varying experience and skill levels.
- Facilitate and lead regularly scheduled training and mentoring activities to strengthen Firm engagement.
- Serve as a resource for attorneys in developing and maintaining their own professional brand and long‑term career trajectory.
- Assist in attorney recruiting, hiring, and onboarding.
- Develop and oversee summer intern program for law students.
- Conduct attorney performance evaluations.
- Track associate billing and goals for advancement.
- Provide regular, strategic reporting to Firm leadership to guide attorney development decisions.
- Manage professional development budget.
- Maintain current knowledge of legal industry trends and best practices in professional development.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s Degree, J.D., and a bar license are required; a California Bar license is strongly preferred, although an active license in another U.S. jurisdiction will be considered.
- Knowledge of the California legal industry and culture.
- Experience working as an attorney in a mid-sized or larger law firm is preferred, but may not be required for the right candidate.
- Demonstrated professionalism and ability to work well with attorneys and staff at all levels.
- Proven track record in delivering projects with deadlines to successful completion.
- Ability to lead meetings and hold attendees accountable.
- Ability to solve problems using creativity and innovation.
- Can work efficiently from a remote location. Ability to travel to Firm locations as needed.
This is a full-time position with a base pay range of $150,000 – $180,000 a year, excluding the opportunity for generous bonuses, and represents Walsworth’s reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of this posting. Actual compensation may vary depending on several factors, including but not limited to, a candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
